Medical Baseline Program
The Medical Baseline Program offered by Southern California Edison (SCE) is a program designed to assist residential customers who have specific medical needs and depend on electric-powered medical equipment or devices. This program provides additional electricity at a lower rate to eligible customers to help them cope with their medical conditions.
Here are some key features of SCE's Medical Baseline Program:
- Lower Cost Electricity: Participants in the program receive a higher baseline allocation of electricity at a lower cost. This helps them manage their energy bills, as they may have increased electricity needs due to their medical equipment.
- Increased Energy Allowance: The program provides additional electricity above the standard baseline allocation. This extra energy is meant to accommodate the use of medical devices, such as ventilators, nebulizers, or electric wheelchairs.
- Notification Prior to Planned Outages: SCE provides advance notice to Medical Baseline customers of planned power outages or maintenance work that may impact their service. This allows participants to make necessary arrangements to ensure their medical equipment continues to function during outages.
To qualify for the Medical Baseline Program, customers typically need a licensed healthcare practitioner to certify their medical condition and the need for specific medical equipment. Eligibility criteria may vary, and it's essential to check with SCE directly for the most up-to-date information on eligibility requirements and program details.
This program is intended to provide support to customers with medical conditions and equipment that are reliant on a consistent supply of electricity, ensuring their health and safety are not compromised during power disruptions or outages. If you or someone you know is eligible for this program, it's advisable to contact SCE to enroll and take advantage of its benefits.

Public Safety Power Shutoff: The Power of Being Prepared
A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is a proactive measure undertaken by utility companies, such as electric providers, to reduce the risk of wildfires or other safety hazards during extreme weather conditions. This involves temporarily cutting off electricity in specific areas or regions to mitigate the threat of wildfires caused by electrical equipment, especially in dry and windy conditions.
The goal of a PSPS is to prevent electrical infrastructure, such as power lines and transformers, from sparking wildfires in high-risk areas. While these shutoffs are taken as a safety precaution, they can impact communities by disrupting power supply, affecting daily life, and potentially posing risks to those who rely on electricity for medical equipment or other critical needs.
Being prepared for a PSPS is crucial. It involves having an emergency plan in place, including access to backup power sources like generators or batteries, sufficient supplies of food, water, and medications, and staying informed about local alerts and updates from utility companies. Preparedness helps individuals and communities cope with the challenges posed by a PSPS and ensure safety during such events.
