The Hawthorne City Council is composed of five members (mayor and four council members). Non-partisan General Municipal elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even numbered years. Elected City Council members serve four year terms and carry out several fiscal responsibilities, including authorization of contracts on the City’s behalf, approval or amendment of the annual City budget, enacting ordinances, resolutions, and appointing the City Manager, the City Attorney, and members to various commissions and committees.
All meetings of the City Council are open to the public and citizens are encouraged to attend to learn more about how the City operates. City Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers, 4455 W. 126th St., on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
The City Council agenda is the official order of business at Council meetings. Items for the agenda are prepared and submitted to the City Council by the City Manager and staff. The agenda is available online on the City’s website at www.cityofhawthorne.org, where the public may access and/or download the agenda and staff reports.

To be elected to a city office, a person must be a U.S. citizen who is 18 years of age or older. Candidates MUST be Hawthorne residents and registered to vote in Hawthorne.
