Customer Participation in Recycling Efforts
Special Notice:
To help the City of Hawthorne stay in compliance with the Law (SB1383), each year, Republic Services will monitor and review customer participation in Recycling efforts.
Why?

When?
Annual reviews are ramping up now, and you may notice Republic’s representatives around town wearing yellow safety vests! Reviews begin the week of August 12, 2024
How?
A Team of Republic Sustainability Advisors will spread out across the City, flipping cart lids and inspecting dumpsters looking for participation, correct use containers contamination. Residents Businesses don’t need to do anything differently, place carts service as you normally our rest.

Residents
Note: For almost all Hawthorne residents, trash service is scheduled the same day as streetsweeping service. Trash service will be delayed one day after the following holidays:
- Labor Day
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day (when it falls on a weekday)
- New Year's Day (when it falls on a weekday)
Bulky items must be placed on the curb only after you call your trash company to arrange to pick up. Hawthorne Municipal Code 8.16 states that it is unlawful to permit garbage to collect.
Properties that use trash carts are entitled to four free special pick-ups per year for bulky items, consisting of 64 cubic feet of material each time. Call Allied Waste at (888) 742-5234 to set up a special pick-up at your address.
Material placed in each Green, Blue, and Brown Carts must comply with the following:
- Green cart = Yard waste: grass clippings, small branches that fit in cart, and houseplant clippings.
- Not permitted: palm fronds, ivy, iceplant, cactus, and plastic bags are not allowed
- Blue cart = Recyclables: Plastic, glass, aluminum, steel items, clean styrofoam and all paper products.
- Not permitted: food waste, yard waste, and garbage are not allowed in this cart.
- Brown cart = Trash: food waste, palm fronds, ivy, iceplant, cactus, and small pieces of wood.
Special Note Regarding Accepted Materials
E-Waste: Means waste that is powered by batteries or electricity (such as computers, telephones, answering machines, radios, stereo equipment, tape players/recorders, phonographs, videocassette players/recorders, compact disc players/recorders, and calculators), including CEDs (a covered electronic device as defined in California Public Resources Code Section 42463) such as the following:
- Cathode ray tube (CRT) device (including television and computer monitor),
- LCD desktop monitor, laptop computer with LCD display,. LCD television,
- Plasma television, and any other covered electronic devices listed in the regulations adopted by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control pursuant to California Health and Safety Code Section 25214.10.1(b)
At no additional cost:
- Lay E-Waste on top of Recyclables carts.
- Set next to recyclable carts if it is too large for safe or convenient discard on top of cart.
Batteries: At No Additional Cost
Discard of Batteries in plastic bags supplied by Republic Services or by oneself and lay on top of Recyclables cart.
Sharps: Means any item having corners, edges, or projections capable of cutting or piercing the skin to deliver injections or for medical purposes, including the following:
- Needles (hypodermic, pen or intravenous),
- Needles with syringes,
- Needles with attached tubing, and
- Lancets.
Within one week of Customer request, Contractor will provide for disposal of sharps generated through personal (not business or commercial) use, including all of the following, without surcharge:
- Containers designed for discard of sharps, that comply with law and are satisfactory to City,
- Shipping boxes with pre-paid postage,
- Pre-addressed labels, and
- Pre-paid disposal.
Not permitted: Paint, pesticides, light bulbs, or any other hazardous wastes are not allowed
Saturdays and Sundays only, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, the Hyperion Treatment Plant, 7660 W. Imperial Highway, Gate B, in Playa del Rey, will accept household hazardous and electronic waste (as listed above) from residents for free. For more information call (888) CleanLA or www.cleanla.com for a list of accepted items. You can transport 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle.
Please Note: Trash bins may not be put out at pick-up location prior to twelve hours of scheduled pick up time, and must be removed from pick-up area within twelve hours of scheduled pick up.
